Job Reflective Narrative:
The person I chose to job shadow was Crystal Champion. A Veterinarian here in Lindsay. My appointment day was March 16 from 12p.m to 4p.m. I watched Crystal on her duty take care of sick, injured animals. I chose to shadow a vet because at the time it seemed interesting at the time to do something different in the Medical Field. Instead if working with the human body I would be dealing with animals.
Throughout the day, stray dogs were found behind the building and they were quickly checked for any sickness or disease. Then the patients with appointments for that day started to walk in. The first patient was a dog, a boxer dog his reason for being seen was because he had a huge cherry eye. I got to see the dog go into surgery and put to sleep. During the surgery Crystal removed most of what was causing the dog to not see. After, everything was done the dog remained asleep.
The next thing I got to do was bathe a 1-2 month old puppy. It was as small as the two palms of my hands. I had a variety of options of what kind of soap to use on the puppy. They all had different scents. Then I dried him with a small bathing towel that was perfect for the puppy.
I learned that becoming a Veterinarian takes a lot of schooling and practices. I got advice from Crystal on what she thinks a person needs to know before entering the Vet career field. She attended UC Davis, and UC Davis Vet School. She recommended to take as much college prep classes as you can and after High School go and observe a vet and see what you like about it. I liked how organized Crystal was and how she did her job. What I really disliked was the odor in the room while being in there it didn’t go away at all. The dogs and cats in the cages would be the cause of that, but that’s part of being a Vet getting used to working with animals.
Unfortunately, I’m no longer interested in this career. A year and a half has passed and within that time another career interested me. It’s still part of the Medical Field but, more to do with the brain and Mental illnesses, Psychology.
